32-year-old Antonio Strangio was detained at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport as he stepped off a flight from Australia, where he has resided since 2016, according to the carabinieri paramilitary police.
An Interpol “red alert” was issued for Strangio because he was allegedly involved in the production and trafficking of drugs.
According to the statement, he is a member of the San Luca-based Strangio clan, which is at the center of the Calabrian ‘ndrangheta organized crime network.
Giorgia Meloni, the premier, praised the arrest and pointed out that it had been made just a few weeks before the capture of Matteo Messina Denaro, one of Italy’s most wanted fugitives who was hiding out under a false name not far from his native Sicily.
According to a statement by Meloni, the administration continues to prioritize the fight against organized crime.
After being detained in Bali, Strangio is currently facing extradition to Rome.
According to an Australian Federal Police official, the Italian and Indonesian governments should handle this problem regarding Strangio’s detention.
