Nick Kyrgios’ common assault allegation was dropped in a Canberra court on Friday, despite the tennis player having earlier entered a guilty plea.
His former girlfriend Chiara Passari was involved in the event, which occurred in 2021.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Magistrate Beth Campbell had dropped the charge because Kyrgios had a minimal risk of reoffending and the event was very small.
When questioned about his immediate plans by a reporter outside the court, Kyrgios responded, “Just rehabilitation, get back on court.”
The 20th-ranked player in the world, who underwent knee surgery after pulling out of the Australian Open last month, expressed his gratitude for the choice on social media.
He wrote on Instagram, “I respect today’s ruling and I’m grateful to the court for dismissing the charges without conviction.”
“I was not in a good position at the time this occurred, and I responded to a trying situation in a way I profoundly regret,” the speaker said.
In order to give their client’s legal team time to compile forensic mental health reports, the Australian’s attorneys requested and were granted an adjournment at an earlier court hearing in October.
