As part of the concurrent campaign against the current administration, the BNP and other opposition parties, alliances, and organizations launched a major sit-in program on Wednesday in the county’s capital and other divisions.
Separate opposition parties organized a four-hour event that started at 10:00 am and ran until 2:00 pm to fulfill their ten-point demand, which included holding the next elections under a non-partisan neutral government.
Leaders and activists from the opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have already gathered at Nayapaltan.
Following the massive parade by the 33 opposition parties on December 30, this is the second program of the parallel movement.
The political transition that occurred on January 11, 2007, sometimes known as “1/11,” was taken into consideration when planning the program, according to BNP officials.
In a meeting with Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on Tuesday, BNP vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain and party law affairs secretary Kaiser Kamal obtained permission to observe the sit-in program in front of their party’s Nayapaltan central office from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
DMP commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq stated that they pleaded with the BNP to adhere to the program while maintaining normal traffic flow. “They (BNP) have to accept the blame if there is a traffic jam.”
Senior BNP figures will speak on the show, including its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and members of its standing committee Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Mirza Abbas.
Additionally, the 12-Party Alliance, Jatiyatabadi Samamona Jote, LDP, and Ganatantrik Bam Oikya will host their events in Bijoy Nagar Water Tank, Purana Paltan, the front of the Jatiya Press Club, the east side of the Jatiya Press Club, and Gonoforum (Montu) at Arambagh.
Although Bangladesh Jamaat Islami joined the mass march program on December 30 along with the BNP and other parties, the Islamist party chose not to participate in the sit-in program due to a strategic location, according to a senior party leader.
The opposition parties and alliances are likely to launch new initiatives after the sit-in to amplify the concurrent movement.
Senior BNP leaders will also participate in the mass sit-in program in several divisions.
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the BNP’s standing committee, will oversee the program in the Sylhet Division, while Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman, and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku will oversee it in the Rajshahi, Chattogram, Barishal, and Rangpur divisions. As the first program of the simultaneous movement, the BNP and 32 other opposition parties organized a mass parade earlier on December 30 in several locations throughout the capital and Rangpur city.
