A Portuguese national has been accused of attempting to smuggle 1.6kg of cocaine into Australia by ingesting more than 100 pellets.
After the individual was detained by Australian federal police and sent to Sydney’s St. George hospital, where, according to a police statement, he later expelled the pellets, the pellets purportedly lit up on a CT scan.
Police believe that each of the 16g pellets contains cocaine.
It comes after the detention of an Irish man who was accused of ingesting six Kinder Surprise capsules, totaling 120g of cocaine, in an act the AFP called “idiotic.”
The Portuguese man arrived at Sydney Airport on Sunday after flying through France and Hong Kong. The Australian Border Force agents at the airport discovered cocaine in his suitcase, according to a statement from the AFP, and he was sent to the hospital to be scanned.
He was charged and will appear in local court in Parramatta on Friday.

The man allegedly ingested the pellets before departing France, according to the authorities. The maximum sentence for bringing this much heroin into Australia is 25 years in prison.
