The government of South Australia wants to bring its holiday legislation in line with those of the rest of the nation, therefore it is asking locals what they think about the state’s public holidays.
In South Australia, a holiday that falls on a Saturday, like Christmas in 2021, is not currently recognized as a holiday.
Therefore, no public holiday pay was given to those who worked on Christmas in 2021.
Public holiday rates were applied and the following Monday was declared a holiday.
When a public holiday falls on a Saturday, South Australia is the only state that does not mandate a holiday for both the Saturday and the Monday.
On its website, SafeWork SA stated, “We don’t want this to happen again, so it is time to harmonize our Christmas Day public holiday rules with the rest of the country.
The retail workers’ union is in favor of the idea and is working to have Easter Sunday declared a public holiday.
Easter Sunday is not a public holiday in any other state or territory except Tasmania.
