Following the discovery of a second woman’s death in Melbourne’s central business district, police are looking into a possible double homicide.
On the evening of December 27, officers were summoned to an apartment on La Trobe Street after a 31-year-old Chinese woman was discovered deceased.
Following a public plea and a thorough police search, a 22-year-old male from Melbourne’s south-east neighborhood of Huntingdale was charged with murder, robbery, and theft.
As part of their investigation into the death of the Chinese woman, police visited another CBD flat on Friday.
A 51-year-old Docklands woman’s body was discovered in a Waterside Place flat.
Police said on Saturday that although investigators had not yet determined the precise circumstances of the death, they were investigating it as suspicious and thought it might be connected to the passing of the first woman.
Detectives weren’t looking for anybody else in connection with the killings, according to officers who believe both ladies knew the Huntingdale guy.
Police requested anyone who possessed CCTV or saw unusual activity around the Docklands flat between December 27 and 29 to report it.
Following the deaths of both of these ladies this week, crime commander Det Supt Dean Thomas stated, “I realize there is a lot of fear and anxiety from the community, particularly those who live in the CBD and nearby areas.”
We have a male in jail who was known to both women, and at this point there is nothing to suggest we are seeking for any further victims.
He has been charged in connection with the death of the 31-year-old lady who was found in the La Trobe Street flat, and we are still looking into his possible involvement in the second death.
According to Thomas, police were making sure that the families of the ladies had access to assistance.
The Huntingdale man was kept in custody on Friday and ordered to show up in Melbourne magistrates court in May.
