As firefighters battle a fire and gas leak at a shopping mall on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, locals have been evacuated.
In response to reports of a fire in the roof of the Newport Village Arcade, more than 30 firefighters and eight trucks sped to Newport, north of Manly, this afternoon.
Locals in the upscale neighbourhood recorded videos of smoke billowing from the buildings on Barrenjoey Road.
The fire was discovered in the roof hollow, but crews withdrew after a section of the roof collapsed and a burst gas line was discovered.
According to Fire and Rescue NSW, some 30 inhabitants of two adjoining apartment buildings were evacuated.
Locals are being warned to avoid the area and gas and electricity have also been turned off.
Investigations into what occurred are under progress.
