The victims were discovered in various units across the building, according to a person familiar with the investigation into a shooting that left five people dead in a condo in the Toronto region.
The source also claims that the alleged shooter, who was fatally shot by police, resided in the structure.
The accused shooter in the Sunday night shooting at the Vaughan, Ontario, condo is a 73-year-old man, according to Ontario’s police watchdog.
Around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, police responded to reports of an active shooter and found a “horrendous scene” there, according to Chief Jim MacSween at a late-night news conference.
In the building, five individuals were discovered dead, and a sixth person was brought to the hospital.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, which is looking into how the police reacted, a member of the York Regional Police shot the alleged shooter, who passed away at the scene.
“An cop and the armed intruder in the building had a conversation. The officer shot the individual with his gun, according to a statement from the SIU. The man was declared dead at the spot after paramedics were called.
About 15 police vehicles and a sizable forensic identification truck were still in front of the high-rise as dawn broke over the condo on Jane Street, just north of Rutherford Road. The building’s main entrance was blocked off with tape.
The condo’s evacuated residents had access to the building early on Monday morning.
The mayor of Vaughan, Steven Del Duca, expressed his condolences to the families of the dead on behalf of the city and thanked the “brave first responders” who worked to “safeguard the situation” in a statement that was published online.
The SIU said six investigators, including two in forensics, have been assigned to look into the police reaction, while the police claimed their investigation is active and ongoing.
When police actions could have caused death or serious harm, the SIU is contacted to conduct an investigation.
According to the civilian oversight organization, a post-mortem was planned for Tuesday.
