The New South Wales branch of the Liberal party has reported itself to the state’s election watchdog and is expelling about half a dozen senior party members following an internal investigation into an allegedly “elaborate and intricate” branch-stacking system.
The alleged branch-stacking scam, which involved having members sign up for the party and provide them false email addresses in a bid to affect important votes on policy and preselections, is thought to have involved more than 100 people.
On Friday, a party representative said the party had provided the electoral commission with its findings and will take prompt action against those guilty.
“The NSW Liberal Party became aware of an attempt to circumvent Party regulations governing branch membership through the deployment of an extensive and sophisticated system of counterfeit domain names,” a spokeswoman for the NSW Liberal Party stated.
“Following a careful examination, the party is taking disciplinary action against a number of our members.
The party has also disclosed its findings to the NSW Electoral Commission.
Dominic Perrottet, the premier, will run for a fourth term on behalf of the Coalition administration in the state election, which will take place in three months.
In inner cities, Teal-style independents are already running for Coalition seats and will emphasize political integrity in their campaigns.
The alleged branch-stacking scheme, which involves the registration of numerous members and the distribution of fictitious email addresses, was first reported by The Sydney Morning Herald in August.
According to the Liberal party inquiry found significant issues in several local government districts, particularly in Sydney’s west and south.
According to a Liberal Party spokeswoman, the party “takes governance seriously” and will not tolerate any activity that comes to light during its investigation.
