The Australian Federal Police are working to crack down on organized criminal gangs inside and outside Australia. Authorities say these criminal gangs smuggle billions of dollars into the Australian economy each year. They are thought to have thousands of anonymous members spread across Australia. A report on the Mafia cycle in Australia.
Since Operation Ironside was made public, the Australian Federal Police has been on the hunt for organized criminals throughout the year.
Last year, 383 people were charged with 2,300 offenses under Operation Ironside.
More than 7.3 tons of illicit drugs, 14 firearms and 55-million-dollar money were seized.
The Italian mafia is now the new target.
Nigel Ryan, assistant commissioner of crime command, thinks there are thousands of members of the notorious mafia group known as the Ndrangheta.
Interpol says N-Dran-Geda came from Calabria, Italy. It is the most widespread and powerful criminal organization in the world.
Now, information from a secret app called “Anom” shows how deeply they have penetrated Australia.
According to Commissioner Ryan, N-Drain-Geda continues drug import, money laundering and violent activities with the help of other organized criminal gangs.
Commissioner Ryan added that it is possible that the neighbor next door to you may be a member of N-Drain-Geda, of which you are not aware.
Its members are difficult to identify due to the lack of information about N-Drain-Geda, said criminologist Andreas Sholarnhart.
Mr Sholarnhart said the mafia group also avoided direct involvement in criminal activity. It is therefore more difficult for the police to frame charges against them.
This mafia cycle has strong international connections. Australian federal police are working with Italian, US, Spanish and Brazilian authorities to disrupt their activities.
Police say N-Drone-Geda has been operating in Australia for years.
