For the first time in two decades, the proportion of Australians born abroad has dropped.

Population figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that the proportion of Australians born abroad has fallen for the first time in more than 20 years. The Covid pandemic is being blamed for the decline. Analysts say it could have a lasting effect on the national economy.

Australia has recorded a decline in overseas births for the first time since 2000.

Experts pointed that opening Australia’s border does not mean that migration numbers will return to normal overnight.

Dr Allen, the Australian National University says, “Australia is now following the old policy of immigration, they are still white dependent and limited.”

Over the past few decades, Australia has become an attractive destination for foreign immigrants, and Australia is being named as one of the world’s leading ‘immigrant countries’, along with the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

Australia’s national population is now close to 26 million. But Australia has recorded a decline in overseas births for the first time since 2000.

The Covid pandemic has stopped migration around the world. Simon Questenmacher of Melbourne’s Demographics Group says this is bad news for the economy.

He said many industries are facing problems due to lack of immigration. Universities have lost a lot of international students, which is their main source of income. The lack of immigrants is a concern for the city’s housing sector. The lack of immigrants will also have an impact on the economy.
