Two people have died and two others are critically injured after a landslip in NSW’s Blue Mountains.
On Monday NSW Police said, a man and a boy have died while a woman and a boy were in a critical condition and had been treated at the scene on Wentworth Pass in Wentworth Falls. Whether the hikers were known to each other has not yet been confirmed.
Blue Mountains Police Commander and Acting Superintendent John Nelson said, the group were bush walking when they were crushed by falling rocks in a landslip. Later on a call was made to emergency services and when they arrived they found a man and a boy had died at the scene.
The critically injured were airlifted to Westmead Hospital in western Sydney, after receiving medical attention at the site, he said.
NSW Ambulance Acting Chief Superintendent Stewart Clarke said, This is absolutely heartbreaking for all involved and a truly tragic ending to what I’m sure was meant to be a pleasant day out.
This was a really complex and delicate rescue operation for our crews who were working to access patients in rugged bushland and were navigating unstable ground, Stewart Clarke said.
Dense bush and vast terrain created difficulties for the rescue operation, with two helicopters and special operations paramedics among the crew deployed for the mission.
On the other hand, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service had released several warnings regarding flood damage and landslip risks in the area.
National Pass is closed due to flood damage and ongoing rockfall risk, and Kedumba Valley Road is closed after the second gate due to another major landslip.
