Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that 5,000 more humanitarian visas will be issued to Ukrainian nationals fleeing the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.
Under this visa, Ukrainian refugees arriving in Australia will be offered the opportunity to work, study and receive free medical treatment.
Sources say that since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 650 Ukrainians have come to Australia with the help of the Australian Immigration Department.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters on Sunday that “in this situation, it is not yet time to determine exactly how many Ukrainian refugees Australia will accept.”
“We will do what needs to be done in this regard,” he said.
According to the United Nations, more than 3.2 million refugees have fled Ukraine since the start of the war. More than 6.4 million people have been internally displaced.
Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke said $450,000 would be provided to help those arriving from Ukraine in the humanitarian visa process. The federal government will work with the state governments in this regard. So that after the Ukrainians arrive in Australia, their access to various places including hospitals and schools can be ensured.
Australian Foreign Minister Maris Payne said the government would provide another ৩০ 30 million to help Ukraine. The purpose of this allocation is to assist women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities in Ukraine.
In addition, the Australian government has decided to increase the range of military cooperation for Ukraine. As part of this, they have confirmed a 21 million package from the Australian Defense Forces.
