Death has befallen the largest crocodile ever kept in captivity.
The nearly 5.5-meter-long Cassius resided at the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island, close to Carins in Far North Queensland.
It is estimated that the saltwater crocodile lived for more than 110 years.
The record for largest crocodile in captivity was held by Cassius, according to Guinness World Records.
“He was more than just a Crocodile he was a cherished member of our family and brought joy and companionship to his best mate George for over 37 years,” the park wrote on its website.
They went on to say that once George was relocated, his health deteriorated.
“George had only recently relocated into Cairns from Marineland after 52 years living on Green Island to an assisted care residence on the 5th October,” according to the article.
Since October 15th, Cassius’s condition has deteriorated. He looked to be much older than a wild Croc would normally be, and people thought he was living forever.
“Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
Since his relocation from the Northern Territory in 1987, Cassius has made the park his home. People may see him being fed by hand.
More than fifteen crocodiles call the park their home.
