According to eyewitnesses, a racially motivated attack in Sydney’s western suburbs resulted in a fatality.
The incident occurred on September 29 outside Ashfield Mall, and surveillance footage shows two guys passing each other before one of them allegedly punches the other in the head.
The 76-year-old man allegedly turned around before the first punch was thrown when the accused, 58-year-old Brian Dutton, allegedly yelled a racist insult at him, according to witnesses.
The owner of the Urban Artisans cafe, John Lou, claims to have witnessed the alleged assault as it happened outside the establishment.
“The man straight away started to attack the old man and hit in head, his face and pushed him on the ground,” said Lou.
‘Racism not welcome’ is our slogan in Ashfield, particularly in this region.
“For us we feel really unsafe, uncomfortable … it’s not acceptable.”
The elderly man was surrounded by bystanders who hurried to his aid as paramedics hurried to the location.
Upon arrival at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the wounded man was brought to consciousness; nevertheless, his condition quickly deteriorated.
His life support was turned off yesterday, and he passed away in the hospital.
Dutton will remain in jail till next week’s appearance in Burwood Local Court after being charged with murder yesterday.
