After confessing to having a romance with a prisoner and smuggling methamphetamine into prison, a former prison security officer managed to avoid jail time.
Following a three-month sexual encounter with inmate Mark Kennedy at Sydney’s west Geoffrey Pearce Correctional Centre, Amber Clavell was instead ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and given a two-year intensive correctional order.
The Hassle Grove resident, who was employed as a drug and alcohol counselor, confessed to a number of charges, including drug possession, improper access to protected information, and misbehavior in a public position.
According to what the court heard, Clavell hid the meth in balloons that she placed under her bra.
She then brought the narcotics into the prison and gave them to Kennedy.
The magistrate informed the court that her absence of appropriate professional qualifications had a role.
The court was also informed that she had confided in Jessica Elguindy, a former colleague in the correctives department who is currently serving a community term for a relationship that occurred while she was in prison.
