Two persons were killed after an SUV drove off the road and into a creek near the NSW-Queensland boundary overnight.
Emergency services were dispatched to Carwal Creek Bridge, south of Mungindi township, when an SUV went down an embankment and submerged in the creek at 1.15 a.m.
Friends discovered the SUV down an embankment as they circled back, recognising it had stopped following them.
The gang and a local property owner assisted in rescuing a 23-year-old woman from the car.
She was sent to John Hunter Hospital in serious but stable condition.
The deaths of a man and a woman in their twenties were discovered in the vehicle about lunchtime.
Police divers and crash investigators were among those who responded to the area.
Morialta Road remains closed in both ways.
