Arsonists targeted a special education institution in Melbourne’s north-east, causing heartbreak among staff and children.
Heatherwood School’s horticultural shed in Donvale was set on fire at 9.30 p.m. yesterday, destroying everything within.
A 19-year-old guy from Wodonga and a 20-year-old man from Mitcham were arrested on the scene and later released.
“There’s a lot of upset families and angry children,” parent Annie Basel stated.
“It’s upsetting for me, other students, and teachers because I really like horticulture and it’s very fun to learn about gardening,” year nine student Tamika Sadler said.
Principal Paul Hills informed parents that graffiti was being painted on buildings, vehicles, and signage.
He stated that assistance will be provided to any affected students.
“Counselling will be offered like last time because our children have the big feelings and we need support with that,” Basel told CNN.
This is the second time the school has been targeted in just over a year.
In August of last year, a fire destroyed classrooms, including the drama and art studios.
“Why would you do this to a community and to a school that do so much, to these kids that need additional needs?,” questioned Jennifer Sadler, a parent.
To alleviate pupils’ shock on Monday morning, the school shared images of the damage to their parents today.
The education department confirmed that courses will continue as usual.
