On Tuesday afternoon, police were called to a home on George Frederick Road in Cranbourne West for an aggravated burglary.
Upon arriving, officers saw a man armed with a knife lunge at constable Jack Van Brummelen, throwing him to the ground and then allegedly stabbing him in the thigh.
“This demonstrates the struggles that our members face each and every day that they report to work,” stated Wayne Gatt, secretary of the Police Association of Victoria.
“They get spat on, they get sworn at, they get stabbed at work.”
Brummelen, who has just been a member of the police for 18 months, has now had surgery and is getting better.
“My team have reached out to him and his partner to check on their welfare and we’ll continue to do that through the week,” Gatt added.
Due to allegations of common law assault, intentional serious injury, assaulting an emergency worker while on duty, and filing a fake police complaint, the 18-year-old Moses Thurairajasingam was not granted bail.
He allegedly used a bogus report to get police to his house.
According to court records, he had enquired of his sister earlier in the day “would they shoot him, but she didn’t think anything of it, if he stabbed a police officer.”
Thurairajasingam is taking medicine for depression and schizophrenia right now.
He’ll appear in court once more in September.
