Last week, off the Gold Coast near Southport, some snorkelers got a little too close and personal with a pod of humpback whales.
When one of the group members got in the way of the whale’s tail, he was launched into the air.
Max Persyn and Jacqueline Payne, two YouTubers from Queensland, documented the playful moment between the gentle giants and themselves while snorkelling with them off the Gold Coast.
The pair was watching one whale below them while surrounded by three of them when the unthinkable occurred.
“All of a sudden there was commotion behind us and someone was up on the tail of the whale,” Payne recalled.
One of their tour leaders was the man on the tail, hoisted out of the water.
The tour guide made it out unscathed.
“This was the first time this had happened to him but he was very ecstatic about it,” Persyn recalled.
