Rory Teiffel attended church twice on Easter Sunday prior to embarking on a drive in his new vehicle with his brother and cousins.
The devout Christian took great pride in his Jeep Grand Cherokee and enthusiastically boasted to his family about its exceptional performance, specifically highlighting its eight-speed transmission.
However, a mere nine-and-a-half minutes after their departure, Teiffel experienced a loss of control and collided with two trees, having reached a speed of up to 246km/h.
His cousin Ryan Suggate, who was 26 years old, died immediately.
Teiffel’s 16-year-old brother Denver was urgently transported to the hospital, but unfortunately, medical intervention was unsuccessful, and he passed away approximately six days later.
Teiffel admitted his guilt to two counts of negligent driving resulting in death, as well as a summary offense of driving while above the legal alcohol limit.

Today, the defendant was sentenced to a minimum of five years and four months in jail for the “tragic” accident that has caused immense grief to his family, as stated in Victoria’s County Court.
Judge Sarah Leighfield determined that the 25-year-old experienced feelings of humiliation and guilt for his actions, leading her to impose a sentence that was less severe than the typical period.
She stated that Teiffel had experienced extrajudicial retribution due to his ongoing grief over the death of his teenage brother and cousin.

Additionally, he has been ostracized from the Brethren Christian church community in which he was raised.
“Being ostracized from the church and the community has been especially challenging when your entire existence has revolved around that community,” she stated.
However, she concluded Teiffel was going at inappropriate speeds in the minutes before the incident.
Teiffel resided in Wangaratta with his parents and brother.
At the time of the crash, his cousins and their parents were visiting.
On Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, after going to church together in the morning and afternoon, Teiffel wanted to show his two cousins and brother the power of his new Jeep.
He went from travelling 90km/h to speeds of high to 246km/h, in less than 10 minutes.
Arron Suggate, Teiffel’s cousin who sustained fractures in the accident, testified in court that the velocity was of such magnitude that it forcefully propels one backwards in their seat.
After 7pm, as he took the Jeep through a bend Teiffel lost control and the car swiped a tree and then slid sideways into a paddock before hitting a second tree and rolling onto its roof.
Judge Leighfield stated Teiffel’s actions was criminally negligent and the speeds were particularly high.
As she sentenced Teiffel to a maximum prison term of eight years and nine months, she aimed to convey a message to young individuals, discouraging them from engaging in similar criminal behavior.
“If individuals choose to drive at high speeds, resulting in the death of another individual or individuals, they will be subjected to substantial imprisonment,” she stated.
Teiffel’s advocates wept in the courtroom as his sentence was pronounced.
He has already completed 44 days of his sentence following his request for bail revocation in July.
