Bail has been granted to the teenager who is suspected of being the driver of a stolen BMW when it struck and killed a 19-year-old motorcyclist in Melbourne.
Days after the parliament voted to toughen bail restrictions and take action against minor criminals, Davide Pollina’s family has expressed their dismay.
A 16-year-old kid was taken into custody by police at a north-east Melbourne residence one week after the fatal hit-run.
They claim that when the stolen BMW crashed into Pollina’s motorbike in Preston, he was driving it.
Eight charges have been brought against the teenager, including homicide by reckless driving, burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, home invasion, and neglecting to stop at the site of an accident and provide help.
The 16-and 17-year-old accused accomplices were also released on bond.
It happens just three days after lawmakers decided to make bail regulations more stringent.
Jacinta Allen, the former mayor, declared she “is not going to cut across a court process.”
John Pesutto, the leader of the opposition, declared that had “no faith that the Allen government’s changes to youth justice will change anything”.
The Pollina family expressed their disappointment with the accused driver’s bail approval and their concern that he may commit more crimes.
Later this week, Davide’s funeral will take place. His remains will be incinerated and returned to Italy.
Next month, the teenager will appear at a children’s court.
