In a suspected crane accident at a coal mine in Queensland, a 48-year-old man lost his life.
At before 7.30 a.m. today, the miner was discovered unconscious at the Byerwen mine near Glenden, west of Mackay.
When emergency personnel arrived, they pronounced him dead.
According to police, his death is not suspicious.
According to Resources Safety and Health Queensland CEO Rob Djukic, the incident appears to have used a pick and carry crane based on preliminary findings.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and colleagues today,” he stated.
The site’s owner, QCoal, a Brisbane-based business, says they are shocked by his passing.
The business released a statement saying, “The passing of the long-serving, senior, and beloved member of the QCoal team has shocked the entire organization.”
“We are focused on the support of the family and the affected staff who are obviously devastated by this tragedy.”
Resources Safety and Health Queensland is leading the investigation, with police support.
“We are committing to a thorough investigation but as that is now underway, we will be limited in what we can say going forward,” Djukic stated.
