Following an alleged violent altercation in Alice Springs, five persons have been placed under arrest and numerous weapons, including a machete and spear, have been taken into custody.
Around 1:15 p.m. today, police received many reports about two groups—possibly related—fighting and brandishing weapons on Bath Street.
Three men, ages 21, 26, and 41, and two girls, ages 17 and 19, were taken into custody on the spot, and the others were scattered.
There were no reports of significant injuries. Numerous weapons, including machetes, baseball bats, spears, and nulla-nullas, were discovered and taken by the police.
The five people who were detained are anticipated to face charges of using an offensive weapon and acting disruptive in a public setting.
“Our community is not the place for this kind of aggressive criminal activity. Acting Southern Commander Drew Slape declared, “We will keep taking action against people who engage in this kind of reprehensible behaviour.”
Slape stated that since Alice Springs is still under a 76-hour curfew, more police will be on duty tonight.
Using his contentious new authority, Police Commissioner Michael Murphy on Monday barred citizens of all ages from entering the city centre without a valid reason between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. until Thursday.
The choice was made in response to several reported violent offences, including the attack of four police officers.
Murphy stated that if necessary, he will think about asking for a curfew extension.
