A father from South Australia who was apprehended in Bali with drugs has expressed gratitude to his family and attorneys after barely escaping years behind bars.
Troy Smith, a father from Port Lincoln, will spend six months in Indonesia undergoing rehabilitation; after that, he will probably go back to his native country.
With regard to the 3.1 grammes of methamphetamine that resulted in his arrest in April, the 49-year-old made his last court appearance today.
After he was first accused of drug trafficking and threatened with death, a judge found him guilty of having the drugs discovered in his hotel room for personal use.
After his attorneys—John Mcleod, who had previously aided Schapelle Corby—successfully argued that he needed treatment rather than incarceration, his charges were reduced.
He thanked everyone in public following his sentencing.
“I just want to thank my lawyers,” he stated.
“To my lovely mother and sister, I am grateful. I apologise and appreciate it.
