Longer jail term given to “callous” killer who buried ex-girlfriend alive
The minimum term for a man who abducted and buried his ex-girlfriend alive in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges has been raised to 28 years and six months.
In February 2023, Tarikjot Singh entered a guilty plea to the murder of Jasmeen Kuar.
He was sentenced to 22 years and 10 months without the possibility of release.
The South Australian Court of Appeal upheld the prosecution’s appeal today, extending the term for the murder, which the court referred to as “particularly callous, born of anger and revenge.”
Tarikjot Singh stalked, kidnapped, and murdered Jasmeen Kuar in March 2021.
Over 400 kilometers had passed since her last sighting when she left her Adelaide workplace when she was buried alive in a shallow grave.
Kuar lived in Adelaide with her aunt and uncle while pursuing her nursing studies.
It is known that Kuar had twice asked police for assistance before to her passing.
Kuar’s aunt recently expressed her opinion that her niece was not adequately protected by the system.
“It makes us sad, angry and makes us question the system that something is not working, something is wrong,” Raman Kharoud said.
“They don’t need to wait until something happens, they need to protect, they are here to protect.”
Kharoud declared following today’s appeals session that her niece’s loss will never be healed.
“Nothing is ever going to be good enough, our loss can never be replaced or repaired,” she stated. “We wish there was a death penalty for him.”
When Singh reaches the age of 49 in 2049, he will be qualified for parole. When he gets released, he will probably be deported to India.
