Under a $450 million NSW government initiative, essential workers will be able to rent newly constructed flats for a subsidised price.
Over the next three years, more than 400 build-to- rent properties have been set aside for up to four new sites throughout metro Sydney.
Through a separate subsidy programme, the homes will be offered to essential workers at a discount to market rent so they may live nearer their workplaces.
Among the vital employees qualified to apply for the new properties are nurses, paramedics, teachers, allied health care providers, police officers and firemen.
Landcom, the residential branch of the state government, will choose the locations preferred for housing from those marked as fit for excess government land.
Subject to planning clearances, building on the first site should start early 2026; essential staff should be able to move in from late 2027.
Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said, “this investment will give hospital staff on night shift, police patrolling until late and so many other essential workers the chance to live near where they work.”
