Two cops have now ended up on the other side of the law, prosecuted for allegedly using excessive force while arresting a 92-year-old man. They were answering an alleged domestic violence call out.
A Current Affair knows the event occurred in Sydney’s south-west on January 21 just before 9pm, when the man’s wife—who might have dementia—made a triple zero call to the police.
Two minutes before police arrived at the Picton house, the woman called once more.
Arriving, it is discovered that the 92-year-old man was arrested and handcuffed after a confrontation between the police occurred.
However, he ended up in the hospital with a broken elbow and notable head and arm injuries claimed to have come from the cops.
The next day, an inquiry into the behaviour was started; the police personnel were working at their stations before their pay suspension today.
Recent times have seen further scandals involving the NSW Police Force. 95-year-old Clare Nowland allegedly walked towards police carrying a knife and was tasered in her NSW nursing home last year.
She later passed away in a hospital; a senior constable will be tried next year in relation to her passing.
After defending her choice not to check body-worn footage of the event, NSW police commissioner Karen Webb came under heavy fire.
Whether the police personnel applied too much force on the 92-year-old man will depend on the courts.
