A house fire in Toowoomba has claimed the life of an 89-year-old man.
At around 3:30 pm, Newtown police and fire personnel were summoned to a residence on Wallace Street.
Despite the paramedics’ best efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the site.
Mark News has learned that while they waited for the firefighters to come, the neighbors attempted to douse the flames using garden hoses.
A second individual with chest problems was brought to the Toowoomba hospital in a stable state.
Firefighters needed about 30 minutes to put out the fire even though there was little external structure damage.
“A large volume of smoke and flames producing from the windows,” according to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services’ Chris Martial, was present when they arrived at the site.
