Following the discovery of a placenta and umbilical cord on Monday near a Sydney river, forensic testing have verified the birth of a baby boy.
Emergency services were summoned to the Cooks River bank at Wardell Road in Earlwood on May 27 at 430 p.m., according to police, following the discovery of evidence indicating a possible birth.
“The baby born is male, as forensic tests have confirmed,” a statement from NSW Police stated.
The mother and child are still being sought after by the police.
“Police hold serious concerns for the welfare of the child and his mother,” according to cops.
“Officers are urging the mother to attend her nearest hospital to receive urgent care for herself and her child.”
Among mangroves, the placenta and umbilical cord were discovered.
Christine McDonald, the superintendent of Burwood, stated earlier this week that she only needed to know the mother was okay.
“I need to know she is receiving the support she needs right now.”
She claimed that there was “no judgement” in the investigation and that there was currently no proof that the infant had been hurt on purpose.
Anybody in the vicinity with information is urged to come forward by the police.
