More than 30 years after the alleged attack, a man has been charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy northwest of Perth.
On October 25, 1991, the youngster was approached by a stranger while riding his bike through the Carine Open Space on his way to meet a buddy after school, according to authorities.
The youngster was then allegedly sexually attacked and confined by the stranger, a guy.
Detective Senior Constable Chloe White claimed that a family tree consisting of nearly 3500 individuals was narrowed down to one man using genetic genealogy and historical forensic evidence.
Following his arrest, a 54-year-old Kingsley man was charged with two charges of aggravated sexual assault and deprivation of liberty.
At a press conference today, White stated, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without the courageous action of the victim coming forward.”
After what she called a “horrific” and “random” incident, White said the victim was “elated” to hear charges had been filed.
“After speaking with him, I can’t imagine what he’s gone through over the last 33 years,” she stated.
“It’s unimaginable for any child, let alone a 13-year-old boy, to have had these crimes committed against him.”
On behalf of the police, Detective Superintendent Rohan Ingles gave a straightforward message to offenders: “We don’t give up.”
“Solving cases like this is incredibly rewarding but most importantly it’s about the victim and providing them with some level of comfort that they are not forgotten and that we are looking into these offences constantly,” he stated during the news conference.
Perth Magistrates Court will hear the 54-year-old accused man’s case today.
