Beginning on July 1, a number of fees and charges levied by the South Australian government will increase.
At a news conference today, South Australian Treasurer Stephen Mullighan stated, “We’re announcing that fees and charges will go up by 3 per cent next financial year, but pleasingly still below the rate of inflation.”
It implies that passengers will have to fight longer lines to board buses, trains, or trams, and that a single trip will cost 20 cents extra.
There will also be an increase in driver licence fees, vehicle registration, and speeding fines.
There will be a $4 registration fee increase for cars with four cylinders and a $9 fee increase for cars with six cylinders.
For five-year licences and ten-year licences, there will be an additional $10 fee to renew a driver’s licence.
When the increases take effect, drivers will also face increased penalties for speeding.
“Inflation is coming down but while there is still a positive rate of inflation that means prices continue to go up,” Mullighan stated.
“We realise everyone is watching every expense in household budgets at the moment” .
When the government gets closer to revealing the budget for next month, it insists that cost of living assistance is still a top concern.
Chief executive of the South Australian Council of Social Service Ross Womer stated, “Clearly there are a bunch of families households across South Australia who will find any increase hard to accommodate.”
“We need to stop seeing the treasurer and premier crowing from the rooftops about how great South Australia’s doing,” stated State Opposition Leader David Speirs. “We actually need them to articulate an economic vision for South Australia,” he stated.
