A father of two from South Australia was reportedly discovered in possession of methamphetamine and was sentenced to prison in Bali.
Last week, Troy Smith of Port Lincoln was vacationing in the popular tourist destination with his wife Tracey when cops broke into his room at a resort in Legian, close to Kuta.
Officers allegedly found 3.19 grams of crystal meth in an envelope received from Cairns, leading to the arrest of both him and his spouse.
The sender of the envelope purportedly addressed it to Troy and added lubricant, pictures, and private documents.
Also purportedly discovered in the villa was a bong.
According to his attorney, Mark News Troy acknowledged that he had the meth, which was hidden within a toothpaste tube.
“He’s admit, as well, that his friend was sending that one because he’s a user,” his attorney stated.
Troy is incarcerated in Denpasar on a charge of drug possession, which entails a possible 12-year term.
Tracey was let go without being prosecuted.
Troy’s attorney stated that he would contend that since Troy had used narcotics for four years, treatment rather than incarceration was more appropriate.
“We’ll do everything we can do as a lawyer … use our knowledge and everything to prove he’s actually a user,” his attorney stated.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Australia verified that it was offering the father consular support.
Indonesia is renowned for its severe drug regulations, which make drug trafficking a capital crime.
