After breaking into a Brisbane home and occupying the roof, the man was taken into custody and a nine-hour police standoff ensued.
When police got to the scene in Keperra, in the north of the city, they reported seeing a man who was “obviously in an agitated state” on the roof.
While neighbours were evacuated or instructed to stay in their homes, police, ambulance, and fire services responded to the scene for hours on end.
The suspect “was armed with two large knives, which then makes that a dangerous situation for police,” according to police inspector Andrew Tracey.
Michael Gaffe, a neighbour, described it as “quite frightening for suburban northern Brisbane.”
After jumping the fences of other properties, the man ended himself on the roof of a stranger’s house, according to other neighbours with whom they spoke.
According to Charlie Hurren, the man “ended up ripping up the tiles off the house and getting into the house’s roof cavity.”
“The poor owner was away up in Cairns,” remarked the man.
Homeowners were given the option of leaving or staying inside their locked homes.
Following numerous hours of discussions, the man descended from the roof before to being taken into custody.
