Officially, police are trying to identify a guy, thought to be in his 40s, who was shot dead by them after several people were stabbed at the East Sydney shopping area, Westfield Bondi Junction.
A 38-year-old mother who was hurt in the event along with her nine-month-old child is among the six persons who have perished.
In addition to the attacker, four women and one guy also passed away at the site, according to NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb.Mom passed away in the hospital later.
Eight patients, including the nine-month-old who had surgery, were brought to hospitals in the Sydney area for care.
Speaking to the media on Saturday night, Webb stated that while police think the attacks were random and unintentional, they are still looking into potential motives.
The commissioner also stated that although legal procedures need to be followed, police think they have identified the culprit.
“We know a little bit about this person but we’re waiting to confirm his identification,” she continued. “We don’t fear that somebody is harbouring ideas if that is who we believe it to be. Put differently, that this isn’t an act of terrorism. “He is known to law enforcement but we’re waiting to identify him formally.”
When it comes to officially designating the individual as suspected, Webb stated that NSW Police “are confident that there is no ongoing risk and we are dealing with one person who is now deceased.”
Sunday is the last day that the shopping mall will be open for business, and the crime scene will be active for several days. According to the police, at approximately 3.10 p.m., a man entered the centre. Ten minutes later, at 3.20 p.m., he returned and started stabbing people.
Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke of NSW Police stated, “We believe that he caused harm to those people by stabbing them with a weapon he was carrying during that engagement.”
After receiving several calls from the public, police hurried to the location. Video that Mark News was able to obtain purports to show a man running with a knife while sporting a rugby league outfit.
When a senior police officer happened to be nearby, people shopping in the centre pointed him in the direction of the man. “She confronted the offender, who had moved by this stage to level five, as she continued to walk quickly behind him to catch up with him,” Cooke stated. “That individual is now dead.
He turned, faced her, drew a knife, and she fired a gun. “Everything happened in a split second. “The officer was in the near vicinity, attended on her own, was guided to the location of the offender by the people who were in the centre and she took the actions that she did saving a range of people’s lives.”
A similar appreciation was expressed by Webb for the “enormously courageous” officer who handled the situation alone. “The police officer who attended is enormously courageous as were other police officers that have attended the Bondi area,” she stated.
“When they got back to the station this afternoon, I had a conversation with them. Webb continued: “She’s doing well under the circumstances, she showed enormous courage and bravery and she will process that.” Although the inquiry is still in its early phases, Cooke stated that authorities were “not ruling anything out” in terms of a motivation. “There’s nothing that we’re aware of at the scene that would indicate any motive or any ideology,” he stated.
At this point, the police have not verified the specifics of the deceased or injured. “I can not provide you with further information in relation to them,” he replied. “Only to say that very clearly, our hearts go out to all of them as they do anyone touched by this terrible incident this afternoon.” Police with heavy weapons moved into the centre, escorting shoppers out of it. The injured, according to NSW Ambulance, have been sent to several hospitals. “Multiple ambulance crews have responded to the incident, including medical teams with doctors onboard,” the statement read. “They have transported multiple patients to hospital, including two people to St Vincent’s Hospital, one person to Sydney Children’s Hospital, one patient to St George Hospital, one to Royal North Shore and two to Royal Prince Alfred.”
Prince of Wales Hospital received a second ambulance. Two brothers have told the story of how they assisted a mother who had been stabbed, as well as her infant. “One of the men told Mark News that the baby had been stabbed.” “The mum got stabbed and the mum came over with the baby and threw it at me and was holding the baby.” The 38-year-old mother passed away in a hospital later, despite the boys and other shoppers doing everything they could to stop the bleeding. A brother expressed his belief that the infant will recover from its wounds.
One of the injured women’s husbands, who spoke to Mark News, expressed relief upon seeing his wife at St. Vincent’s Hospital. “We didn’t know what had happened,” he stated. “They claimed she had just received a little knife wound to the upper right corner of her back. “She thought she got punched and then she touched herself and there was blood but apart from that, she’s okay, she’s alive and that’s all that matters.” The man claimed that his “stress was over” as soon as he saw his wife. “No one could tell you anything when we were there,” he replied. “It was terrible but she’s good now.”
An employee at the grocery store at the centre earlier told Mark News that he was allowed to leave the mall shortly after 4.30 p.m. “My girlfriend called me, she said that her mum works upstairs, level three and she said, ‘Look, please be careful, there’s a shooting,'” stated the man. “My reaction was to basically put all the customers inside and close the door of the shop.” Anthony Albanese, the prime minister, described the attack as “beyond words or understanding.”
Australians, he claimed, will be “shocked” by the knife-wielding man who attacked Westfield Bondi Junction and was fatally shot by a policeman shortly after 3pm. “This was a horrific act of violence, indiscriminately targeted at innocent people going about an ordinary Saturday doing their shopping,” he stated. ”
All Australians’ first thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones of these horrific acts. “Our nation offers our deepest condolences and sympathies to all those who are grieving for someone they have lost and we send our strength to those who have been injured.” He commended the medical personnel attending to the eight patients—among them a baby—who were taken to the hospital by ambulance. He also spoke of the shoppers who went out of their way to assist the injured. ”
Today at Bondi Junction was the scene of shocking violence, but it was also witness to the humanity and the heroism of our fellow Australians, our brave police, our first responders and of course, everyday people who could never have imagined that they would face such a moment,” he stated. “Helping others was these Aussies’ first impulse when they were in peril. That’s what Australians cling to this evening.”
In response to the incident, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, sent a rare, intimate statement on social media. The pair themselves wrote the post, as indicated by the casual signature “W & C” at the end of the brief statement. “We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today,” they stated in a letter. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others.”
Following the tragedy, King Charles, who has made several previous trips to the Bondi region, also formally conveyed his support to the Australian people. The monarch stated in the statement, “My wife and I were utterly shocked and horrified to hear of the tragic stabbing incident in Bondi.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who were senselessly attacked and cruelly slaughtered. Even if the specifics of these horrific events are still being worked out, we are grateful for the bravery displayed by the emergency services and first responders, and our sympathies are with everyone who participated in the response.
Charles R. A major stabbing incident at Bondi Junction’s Westfield shopping complex in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has left six people dead. A lone cop at the scene shot and killed the individual, who was believed to be a 40-year-old male known to the police.
According to the police, he did not act “with ideation”. Just after 3pm, eight persons were attacked and sent to the hospital in critical condition. Among those stabbed were a mother and a baby. Since then, the 38-year-old mother has passed away from her wounds. The infant is still receiving care.
A man seen on camera clutching a knife while donning a rugby league jersey is seen running away from the store. Crowds can be seen in the stairwells on mobile phone footage, and some consumers claim they were evacuated to the roof. While some victims cowered in stores for up to two hours, shoppers assisted the victims.
There is no continued threat; the attacker was acting alone.
