As Transport for NSW evaluates the safety of child pedestrians cycling and walking to and from school, school zone speeds may be reduced.
With new data indicating that 25% of students in New South Wales walk or ride their bikes to school every day, the state government has requested that Transport for NSW investigate safety measures for pedestrians near school zones.
If it is discovered that speed contributes to road traumas, the modifications may include lowered speed restrictions in and near school zones and increased safety infrastructure.
NSW Minister for Roads John Graham stated, “Children are our most precious pedestrians and we want the safest possible environment for them to get between home and school.”
“Transport for NSW has been tasked with looking at the busy thoroughfares used by school children that are located close to school zones.”
The Minister’s office stated that children may be placed in danger if they choose to walk to and from school outside of designated school zones.
When conducting the audit, Transport for NSW will confer with relevant parties, including local governments and schools.
“The NSW Government is investing in safer walking and riding options, but if there is more that can be done, we will do it,” Graham stated.
“School zones have proven very safe so this is a natural next step to look at safety nearby.”
