Following a shark attack off the coast of Western Australia, a woman was transported by air to a hospital.
At Sandland Island, which is around 230 kilometres north of Perth, in the waters north of Jurien Bay, an event occurred early on Monday.
A spokesman for St John Ambulance WA told SkyNews.com.au that at 11:44 a.m., two road crews and a rescue chopper were dispatched to a “priority one” situation.
A woman in her 40s was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital, according to the spokesman, but she was unable to provide any details on her injuries.
The spokeswoman said that she was scheduled to land at roughly 3 p.m. AWST.
On Monday, the SharkSmart website of WA’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development published a notice regarding the occurrence.
According to the DPIRD, at around 11.30 am, a woman near Sandland Island entered waist-deep water and was bitten by what seemed to be a two-meter tiger shark.
“DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses,” it stated.
While investigators conduct their investigation, the DPIRD has advised residents to exercise “additional caution in the Sandland Island and Jurien Bay area”.
“Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA,” the advisory warned.
“Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.”
After the attack, beaches have been closed, according to a DPIRD notice that Surf Life Saving WA later posted on social media.
“DPIRD Fisheries advise that beaches have been closed between Sandy Cape and North Head, Jurien Bay due to a shark incident,” the organisation posted to X.
Situated within the Jurien Bay Marine Park, Sandland Island spans approximately two hectares.
