After being charged with two murders on Friday, a NSW Police officer is being held in protective custody today on suspicion of killing a Sydney couple.
Detectives suspected Beau Lamarre-Condon of killing flight attendant Luke Davies and former Ten presenter Jesse Baird, so the senior constable spent the night in Sydney’s West’s Silverwater Correctional Complex.
According to the authorities, Lamarre-Condon was Baird’s former partner.
In an evening statement, the AFL—with which Baird was affiliated as an umpire—confirmed their condolences to his friends and colleagues.
“We understand it is a very upsetting and confronting time for all involved especially for Jesse and Luke’s families and those at the AFL who had a relationship with Jesse through his umpiring,” the organisation stated.
“Among our AFL umpiring family, Jesse was well-liked and well-respected.
“In light of the news today, we will keep providing Jesse’s family with support and counselling to any member of our umpiring team as well as the larger AFL football department.
“The entire AFL family’s thoughts are with both Jesse and Luke’s families, as well as our umpiring and broader team during this very difficult time.”
2011 saw Baird start off in the Northern Football and Netball League as an umpire.
After relocating to Queensland in 2017, he made his AFL umpiring list debut in 2020.
On Friday morning, about 10.30 a.m., Lamarre-Condon turned himself in at the Bondi Police Station.
He killed Davis and Baird sometime on Monday morning, according to the police, and then hired a vehicle to dispose of the bodies that night.
One of the men’s social media profiles was updated on Tuesday, but nobody had really viewed them.
Around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, a staff member at Club Cronulla in Sydney’s south discovered bloodied belongings to both males in a skip-bin.
Among the things were clothes, wallets, credit cards, and a $8000 watch.
Police “immediately” set up a crime scene at Baird’s residence on Brown Street in Paddington as a result of the discovery.
A “significant” amount of blood was discovered at the residence, according to the police, who also expressed “grave concerns” for Davis and Baird.
On Friday, they said that Lamarre-Condon had murdered the two men inside the house.
Although Lamarre-Condon’s police-issued Glock was found among the gun casings at the site, the cause of death is still unknown.
On Monday, witnesses heard shouting “coming from the vicinity” of the home, according to Detective Superintendent Jodi Radmore, who made the announcement on Thursday.
As claims of a third party connected to the “suspicious disappearance” surfaced, police executed a search warrant at a residence on Waite Avenue in Balmain on Thursday.
Authorities are still working to create a schedule.
The van Lamarre-Condon is said to have used to dispose of the bodies was discovered on Friday, after he allegedly drove to a house in the Newcastle region at some point on Thursday.
The senior officer was shown on CCTV going barefoot and clutching his shoes in his hands as he strolled down the street in Gray’s Point.
On Friday, he was charged with murder and appeared in court on both counts.
