After heavy rain fell early this morning over the southeast of the state, Brisbane experienced its wettest day since the floods of 2022.
With 183 mm of rain falling in the previous 24 hours, the capital of the sunshine state saw rivers overflow and flash flooding block highways and approach homes.
“That is the highest 24-hour total that we have seen since February 2022,” Laura Boekel of the Bureau of Meteorology stated.
The hardest-hit locations were Logan, Brisbane, and Redland, where many locals experienced mild flooding.
In a 24-hour period, Mount Coot-tha received 195mm and Rosalie received 209mm.
One of the residents said, “I woke up to see the creek in the backyard.”
Overnight, at least seven rapid water rescues had to be responded to, according to Brad Commens, the state coordinator for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service.
“A lot of those rescues are because of people driving into flood waters,” Commens stated.
Drivers nevertheless had to negotiate flooded roads while travelling to and from the city for work.
The Brisbane City Council apologised this afternoon for its flood alert system’s inability to notify locals.
Just before 1pm, the bureau cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning that it had issued at 8.15am.
The Sunshine Coast has also seen a reduction in heavy rainfall.
