The parents of a two-year-old toddler were charged with murder by the police after a 14-month inquiry into her untimely death in the north Queensland city of Mackay over a year ago.
It will be claimed that the child was ill for a while and that the parents neglected to get her medical attention.
The pair faces additional charges for neglecting to register the birth.
On Wednesday, the 37-year-old man and the 38-year-old lady were transported to the local police station after being arrested in Mackay.
The two, who are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, were later charged by detectives from the Mackay Child Protection and Investigation Unit.
On the evening of December 29, Diana, who was two years old at the time, was taken to the hospital after her mother discovered her unconscious at home. At the Mackay Base Hospital, she was later pronounced deceased.
To look into the untimely death, which the police at the time deemed suspicious, a specialized taskforce of detectives from the Crime and Intelligence Command, Child Protection and Investigation Unit, and Child Trauma Unit was established.
Three months after the incident, in March of last year, police released film showing Diana being carried in a harness on a woman’s back inside a Coles supermarket, with a few other small children trailing after.
Between 3:30 and 5:30 on the day of her death, the vision was recorded. She is believed to have visited the United Chemist in Andergrove before Coles.
At the time, authorities stated that the child had been ill in the days preceding her death and that the focus of their inquiry would be the medical attention given to her at that time.
