On a sunny afternoon in the North Adelaide parklands, a woman in her 20s passed away after a gum tree branch fell on her as she was sitting in the shade.
Following the strange event, emergency personnel raced to War Memorial Drive, which is close to the CBD, at 2:30 p.m.
In the park, a woman who was seated beneath the branch passed away.
Declan Dwyer of the Metropolitan Fire Service reported that his team arrived on the site shortly after the tree branch fell.
“Knowing there was a person trapped we were going to have to swing into life support and first aid but unfortunately there was nothing we could do,” Dwyer stated.
An employee at the daycare facility across from the park claimed that after the kids were informed that something had happened, she had to usher them all inside.
The childminder remarked, “This woman looked like she was just sitting on the grass eating something.”
The Adelaide City Council instructed employees to conduct routine safety and health inspections of the gum trees.
It is understood that this particular tree was recently inspected.
The incident will be the subject of an official investigation by the council. After being restricted to traffic, War Memorial Drive is now open again.
