A man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in a hotel restroom in a town in Western Australia over ten years ago has been apprehended thanks to developments in DNA forensics technology.
According to the police, on December 13, 2014, the woman, who was in her 30s at the time, entered the women’s restroom while she was in the hotel’s public area in Jurien Bay.
Authorities said the man raped the woman after following her into the restroom.
Situated 220 kilometers north of Perth, in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region, sits the beach town of Jurien Bay.
At the time, the claims were looked into, and a suspect was found, but not enough evidence was found to bring charges against him.
Detectives from WA’s Special Crime Division started a thorough examination of the inquiry last year, utilizing advanced DNA forensic methods to examine material taken at the scene of the purported attack.
The 36-year-old, who was 27 at the time of the alleged incident, was then charged with one count of sexual intercourse without permission.
The individual is scheduled to return to court to answer to the charge on February 28 after making his initial court appearance on December 20.
