A man who was reportedly snorkelling was discovered dead during a frantic search off a beach on Melbourne’s southwest bayside.
After he vanished off Altona Beach in Port Phillip Bay this afternoon, emergency services received calls at approximately 4 p.m.
Before nightfall, lifesavers on boats and jet skis, police divers, and two rescue aircraft could be seen participating in the extensive search.
The man was last seen east of the Surf Life Saving Club, according to witnesses who informed the police that he was snorkeling.
Police verified his death shortly after 9 p.m.
Police were not considering the man’s death suspicious; they were only getting ready to submit a report to the coroner.
Less than a year had passed since a 61-year-old diver with three pals was discovered dead off the same beach following what seemed to be a drowning.
