Five individuals who were “minding their own business” on Melbourne streets were allegedly randomly stabbed four times, leading to the charging of a guy.
Over a dozen charges have been brought against a 31-year-old Melton man in connection with the stabbings that occurred last night over the course of three hours in the city’s CBD, St Kilda East, and St Kilda.
Although the police have stated that they are unsure of the attacks’ motivations, they do not think they were terror-related.
Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Eyries informed the media this morning that the victims had done “absolutely nothing” to incite any of the incidents prior to being “cowardly attacked”.
“On each occasion, the victims were minding their own business, they wouldn’t have even known they were about to be attacked,” he stated.
“They have no links whatsoever to the man in custody.”
Around 9.20 p.m. last night, in Southbank, the first of the four incidents occurred when a 28-year-old man was stabbed while strolling along City Road, close to Kings Way.
The victim, a Mount Waverley male, was brought to the hospital with injuries to his torso and leg that did not pose a life-threatening risk.
Then, at around ten o’clock at night, a 24-year-old was stabbed in the back outside a burger joint on King Street.
“It wouldn’t have been known by the victim,” stated Senior Sergeant Eyries.
He was brought to the hospital with a leg injury that was not life-threatening.
According to police, the perpetrator then traveled, perhaps via public transportation, to Dandenong Road in St Kilda East.
He is accused of attacking a man and a woman, both 31, just before 11 p.m., leaving the woman with potentially fatal injuries.
“She sustained multiple stab wounds,” stated Senior Sergeant Eyries.
Overnight, her status was lowered from critical but stable to less than life-threatening.
The man, who was rushed to the hospital with a significant arm injury, was thought to be her spouse. After that, the attacker is thought to have gone to Acland Street, which is close by in St Kilda, where a 31-year-old English tourist is said to have been stabbed shortly after midnight.
His wounds were not life-threatening when he was brought to the hospital.
Following the distribution of photos of the man to all police, who was dressed in a “very distinctive” lime green hooded sweater and dark cargo pants, a PSO saw the man on a train at 1:30 in the morning.
A 31-year-old Melton man was apprehended using capsicum powder close to Balaclava station following a brief foot pursuit, said to Senior Sergeant Eyries.
According to the police, he had a cache of weapons, including kitchen knives, in his rucksack.
He is accused of crimes such as deliberately causing hurt and purposely causing significant injury in situations involving gross violence.
Tomorrow, he will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
According to Senior Sergeant Eyries, police were looking into whether the individual in detention had used drugs or alcohol, or if his actions were influenced by his mental condition.
Although they are searching CCTV, they have asked anyone who has footage of the man—who is described as looking Caucasian—to get in touch with them.
