According to reports, a stranger fatally stabbed the man on a Melbourne street on Tuesday while he was walking to the bus stop in broad daylight.
Just after midday on January 2, Spiros Filidis was fatally stabbed during an attack at the Hampton East corner of Little Avenue and Widdop Crescent.
Sadly, the 46-year-old passed away at the site despite rescuers’ best efforts to save his life after being discovered on the side of the road with upper body injuries.
Filidis, who had an intellectual handicap and had just recovered from prostate cancer, was traveling to the Southland shopping center when he was attacked, according to his godmother Christine Kounelis.
She described Filidis as a “beautiful person” in her memory.
“He was always happy, independent, even though he had a disability,” she said.
“I just keep thinking about how he was on his own, no one there and he couldn’t defend himself.”
A 27-year-old Moorabbin man is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow after being charged with murder by homicide investigators.
On the day of the fatal attack, the accused man was taken into custody on unrelated charges.
The attack’s motivation is still unknown, but Filidis’ family is startled because it took place during the day in a normally safe neighborhood.
“It’s not going to help me, we’re still going to miss this adorable boy,” she said.
“He was the life of the party and we’ll always have a chair for him.”
