In the most recent of a tragic series of attacks in the state this year, a young surfer has died following a shark bite in the southwest of South Australia.
The Yorke Peninsula’s Ethel Beach, which is located roughly 160 kilometres west of Adelaide, is still closed off after the shark attacked at 1:30 p.m. today.
According to police, a teenage boy’s body was found in the water.
“Yorke Mid North Police, detectives and crime scene investigators attended at the scene,” according to authorities.
“Police are preparing a report for the coroner.”
According to Mark News, the victim was travelling from Adelaide for the day to surf at the Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park beach.
Despite the difficult weather, the Adelaide-based rescue aircraft was dispatched, but nothing could be done until the boy’s body was removed from the ocean.
It is believed that the victim was an experienced surfer, as the Ethel Beach surfing break is regarded as a difficult wave.
Large schools of salmon, which are present in the area at this time of year, were being chased by sharks not far from the shore two days ago.
According to experts, there could be other reasons why the shark attacked at the location it did today.
“Today this incident could be related to being overcast, fish running past that surf beach area and slightly dirty water are all conditions that help ambush predators become more motivated,” Andrew Fox, a shark specialist, said.
This year, there have been five shark attacks in South Australia.
A suspected shark attack at Port Noarlunga jetty resulted in facial and scalp injuries for a 32-year-old lady in November.
Todd, a 55-year-old surfer, may have perished at Granites Beach, close to Streaky Bay, at the hands of a shark.
A portion of his board and wetsuit were discovered, but his corpse was never found.
Pam Cook, 64, managed to survive a bite while swimming in Beachport.
After being attacked in May while surfing off the west coast of the state, Simon Bacanello went missing, and his body was never discovered.
