At Port Phillip Prison, a 42-year-old male prisoner was stabbed with an improvised weapon, leaving him with significant injuries.
The jail is owned and operated by G4S Correctional Services, and the event occurred there yesterday evening about five o’clock, according to their statement.
With over a thousand inmates, Port Phillip is the biggest maximum security prison in Victoria.
One prisoner had “upper body injuries” after a battle between the two, according to a G4S Correctional Services spokesman.
After being brought to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the man’s condition is stable. His wounds do not pose a threat to his life.
The prison spokeswoman added, “Like any incident of this nature, we will work closely with Victoria Police who will conduct an investigation.”
