Following their earlier frustration with drivers during the morning commute, climate change activists have now interrupted traffic in Melbourne this evening.
Police have been spotted in the CBD as members of Extinction Rebellion continue to roam the area.
The demonstrators were scheduled to go to the Queen Victoria Market after leaving the State Library, however police intervened and they ended up walking into Melbourne Central.
This morning during the morning rush, the gang closed down the CBD. At at 7.30 am, they began a leisurely one-hour march along Kings Street to Flagstaff Gardens, calling attention to what they see to be a botched UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai.
The show is a preview of what’s to come in the coming days. On Saturday, there will be a significant disruption as more than 200 people are anticipated to sit in a major CBD route and not budge.
On Thursday and Friday, there will likely be additional traffic jams in the CBD. Brad Homewood from Extinction Rebellion said, “We sincerely apologise to the public; we don’t like doing this and wish it didn’t have to come to this.”
“They can disregard things like signing petitions and writing letters. This cannot be disregarded.”
