The debris of a plane crash that killed two men in Victoria’s Port Phillip Bay has been retrieved by police.
As part of a complicated operation this morning, recovery personnel hauled a significant portion of the aeroplane out of the sea.
The aircraft’s main body, measuring around four metres in width and one tonne in weight, was raised by a crane and brought to Port Melbourne on a barge.
Any human remains from the wreckage that have not yet been formally identified will be collected, according to the police.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will inspect the aircraft.
On Sunday, November 19, two tiny planes collided over the bay, and one of them went into the sea.
The next day, the plane was discovered off Mornington’s coast.
The only two people on board the aircraft at the time were the pilot, 56-year-old Brunswick resident Stephen Gale, and the cameraman, 30 year-old Surrey Hills resident James Rose.
To determine the precise circumstances behind the incident, investigators are still at work.
