Following an alleged one-punch attack outside a pub in Queensland, which is thought to have been motivated by a money debt, two men have been charged with murder.
Following the alleged attack in Gympie, southeast Queensland, a 41-year-old man with significant head injuries passed away in hospital this morning.
The 41-year-old received first aid from onlookers following the incident in the wee hours of November 19.
Around two in the morning, outside the tavern on Mary Street, the victim, according to the police, was punched, collapsed, and banged his head on the road.
After being transported in critical condition to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, he passed away this morning from his wounds.
Police first accused the males, aged 24 and 21, with grievous bodily harm but the charge was increased to murder in the Gympie Magistrates Court today.
Both guys were remanded in jail.
Detective Inspector Wade Lee said the local males were all known to one other and that the altercation was over money supposedly due.
“One punch can kill, and that’s essentially what we’ve seen here today,” he said.
“We’ve seen alcohol-fueled violence, which has ultimately destroyed a number of lives.”
The males will face serious bodily harm charges, which police say are anticipated to be increased to murder.
Police are seeking to anyone who may have observed the assault, or who may have dash-cam or CCTV evidence from Mary Street or Horseshoe Bend, to contact them.
